The Great Flying Head is a creature first told of by the Iroquois. According to legend, it is “four times as tall as the tallest man,” with gigantic wings growing from the sides of its head. Its mouth is full of fangs rather than teeth so that it can devour its prey. In many stories, the flying head is fooled and defeated by a human, showing its stupidity (Yolen 233-234).
The head’s traits of greed and stupidity suggest that it is an explanation for the weakness of humankind. People often have these negative qualities, and since the monster is a horrible, mutated humanoid, it shows the worst possible side of humans and warns people against letting these qualities take over.
